Diocese of Concepción

The Diocese of Concepción, a suffragan diocese of the Latin Rite, was a historic diocese in Chile. Established in 1840 by Pope Gregory XVI, it served the southern regions of the country until its elevation. Its territory formed the basis for the present-day Archdiocese of Concepción.

Establishment

The Diocese of Concepción was erected on 17 November 1840 by Pope Gregory XVI to serve the growing Catholic population in southern Chile.

History

The diocese developed amid Chile's post-independence expansion, with its see located in the city of Concepción. It oversaw missionary work and parish growth in the Biobío Region until 1939, when it was elevated to archdiocesan status.
