Establishment
The Diocese of Comayagua was erected on 30 April 1963 by Pope John XXIII to serve the growing Catholic population in central Honduras, taking territory from the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa.
History
The present diocese continues a long Catholic presence in the region that dates to the sixteenth century, when an earlier Diocese of Comayagua existed from 1561 until its see was transferred in 1916. The modern diocese was created to address pastoral needs in the historic city of Comayagua and surrounding departments.
Geography
The diocese covers territory in the central part of Honduras, primarily within the Comayagua Department and adjacent areas. It forms part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Tegucigalpa.
