Establishment
The Diocese of Cayenne was erected on 10 July 1956 by Pope Pius XII from territory previously under the Vicariate Apostolic of French Guiana-Cayenne.
History
Catholic presence in the region dates to the 17th century with French colonization and missionary activity by religious orders. The modern diocese was created to provide stable episcopal leadership for the growing Catholic population in French Guiana.
