Establishment
The Diocese of Campanha was erected on 28 August 1907 by Pope Pius X from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Mariana and the Diocese of Pouso Alegre, to better serve the expanding Catholic communities in southern Minas Gerais.
History
Early Years
The region had been evangelized since the 18th century by Portuguese missionaries and later by diocesan clergy from neighboring sees. The new diocese quickly established parishes and schools to support rural populations.
Modern Era
Boundary adjustments occurred in the mid-20th century as new dioceses were created in the province. The diocese has emphasized formation of the laity and care for migrants.
Geography
The diocese covers parts of southern Minas Gerais, including the municipalities of Campanha, Lambari, Três Corações, and surrounding areas. It belongs to the Ecclesiastical Province of Pouso Alegre.
Mother Church
The Cathedral of St. Joseph in Campanha serves as the mother church. Constructed in the early 20th century in neoclassical style, it houses the diocesan seat and major liturgical celebrations.
