Establishment

The Diocese of Camden was canonically erected on July 4, 1937, by Pope Pius XI through the apostolic constitution In Petri cathedra, carved out from the territory of the then-Archdiocese of Newark.[3] It was created to better serve the growing Catholic population in southern New Jersey, with Bishop-elect Bartholomew J. Eustace appointed as its first ordinary.[4]

History

The diocese's history reflects the immigration waves that shaped southern New Jersey, particularly Irish, Italian, Polish, and later Hispanic communities. Early challenges included the Great Depression and World War II, during which Bishop Eustace oversaw the construction of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

In the post-war era, under Bishops McCarthy and McHugh, the diocese expanded its educational and charitable institutions amid suburban growth. Mother church

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Camden serves as the mother church. Completed in 1864 in Gothic Revival style, it was elevated to cathedral status in 1937 and renovated in the 1990s to accommodate growing liturgical needs.[8]

Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan, installed on January 30, 2013, previously served as auxiliary bishop of New York. He has prioritized priestly formation, synodal consultation, and pro-life initiatives.[9]
