Establishment

The Diocese of Calgary was canonically erected on March 24, 1912, by Pope Pius X through the apostolic constitution Singulari as a suffragan see of the Archdiocese of Edmonton, detached from its predecessor territory to address the spiritual needs of southern Alberta's burgeoning immigrant communities, particularly from Europe and eastern Canada.[3][4]

History

Early Development

The diocese emerged during a period of rapid settlement in western Canada, with its first bishop, John Thomas McNally, overseeing the construction of churches and schools amid challenges like World War I and the Spanish Flu. Boundary adjustments occurred in 1948 and 1949, incorporating areas from neighboring dioceses.[5]

Modern Era

Mother church

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Calgary, constructed in 1955 in a modern Romanesque style, serves as the diocese's mother church and seat of the bishop. It features a prominent dome and hosts major liturgical events.[9]

Bishop Peter Joseph Mallon, appointed as Coadjutor Bishop in 2010 and succeeding as the eighth ordinary on January 3, 2018, previously served as rector of St. Peter Seminary in London, Ontario. He emphasizes evangelization, priestly formation, and fidelity to Church teachings.[10][11]
