Establishment

The Diocese of Bridgeport was canonically erected on July 6, 1953, by Pope Pius XII through the apostolic constitution Ad animarum bonum, carved from the territory of the Archdiocese of Hartford to address the spiritual needs of the rapidly growing Catholic population in Fairfield County, driven by post-World War II suburban expansion.[1][2]

History

The diocese's history reflects the industrialization and immigration waves in southwestern Connecticut. Under its first bishop, Lawrence S. McMahon, it built foundational institutions amid the baby boom era. Boundary changes were minimal, but it navigated challenges like the 2002 clergy abuse crisis, leading to reforms under Bishops Lori and Caggiano. Edward Egan's tenure (1988–2000) elevated its profile before his transfer to New York.[3][4]
