Diocese of Both Californias
The Diocese of Both Californias, a suffragan diocese of the Latin Rite, was a historic diocese encompassing the territories of Alta California and Baja California in what is now Mexico and the United States. Founded in 1840 by Pope Gregory XVI, it was led by its sole residential bishop, Francisco Garcia Diego y Moreno. The diocese played a foundational role in organizing Catholic life in the Californias during the transition from Mexican to American rule before its suppression and reorganization in the mid-nineteenth century. Establishment
The Diocese of Both Californias was established on 27 April 1840 by Pope Gregory XVI to serve the Catholic population across the Californias, previously under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Sonora.
History
Early Years
The diocese was created amid growing Catholic communities in the mission territories of Alta and Baja California following Mexican independence. Bishop Francisco Garcia Diego y Moreno, appointed as the first and only residential ordinary, focused on restoring mission properties and establishing new parishes.
Suppression
The see was suppressed in 1849 following the Mexican-American War and the cession of Alta California to the United States. Its territory was reorganized, with the northern portion becoming the Diocese of Monterey.
Geography
The diocese covered the historical regions of Alta California and Baja California, corresponding to modern-day California in the United States and the Baja California peninsula in Mexico. It formed part of the broader ecclesiastical structure in northern Mexico during the early nineteenth century.
Mother Church
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in San Diego served as the mother church until the see's reorganization.
