Establishment
The Diocese of Blumenau was established on 5 January 2000 by Pope John Paul II to serve the growing Catholic population in the Blumenau area, carved from territory previously under the Archdiocese of Florianópolis.
History
The diocese was created amid the expansion of the Catholic Church in southern Brazil during the late 20th century. Its territory includes regions with strong German immigrant heritage, influencing local devotional practices. Boundary adjustments have been minimal since its founding, allowing steady development of parishes and institutions.
Geography
The diocese covers parts of the Vale do Itajaí region in Santa Catarina, including the municipalities of Blumenau, Brusque, Gaspar, Indaial, and Pomerode. It forms part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Florianópolis.
