Establishment
The Diocese of Bluefields traces its origins to the Apostolic Vicariate of Bluefields, erected on 2 December 1913 by Pope Pius X to provide pastoral care for the remote eastern coast of Nicaragua.
History
The territory began as a mission area under the care of Capuchin friars. It was elevated to the status of a diocese on 30 November 1984. The diocese has experienced significant challenges due to natural disasters, including Hurricane Joan in 1988 and Hurricane Felix in 2007, which affected many of its communities.

The diocese covers the South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region of Nicaragua, including the city of Bluefields and surrounding rural and coastal areas.
