The Diocese of Bethlehem was established on January 11, 1951, by Pope Pius XII, elevating the Apostolic Vicariate of Bethlehem, which had been created on February 12, 1948, from the Apostolic Vicariate of Kroonstad.[1]

The territory was initially part of the Kroonstad Vicariate until 1948, when it was partitioned and entrusted to the Holy Ghost Fathers (CSSp) of the German Province. It was promoted to a diocese in 1951.[2]
