Establishment

The Diocese of Beaumont was canonically erected on July 17, 1961, by Pope John XXIII, taking territory from the Diocese of Galveston-Houston (then Diocese of Houston-Galveston) to serve the Catholic population in southeast Texas amid post-World War II growth.[1][2]

History

The diocese was created to address the spiritual needs of a rapidly expanding region influenced by the oil industry and population growth. Early challenges included building infrastructure in rural areas. Boundary adjustments occurred minimally, with stable territory since inception.[3]

In 2006, St. Anthony Cathedral was elevated to minor basilica status by Pope Benedict XVI, recognizing its role as a regional pilgrimage site.[4]

Geography

The diocese covers nine counties in southeast Texas: Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, and Tyler. This area spans approximately 9,400 square miles (24,000 km²) of coastal plains, piney woods, and bayous, forming part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Galveston-Houston.[5][6]

Mother church

St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica in Beaumont serves as the mother church. Completed in 1907 in Romanesque Revival style with later expansions, it was designated a basilica in 2006, featuring notable stained glass and a relic of St. Anthony of Padua.[7]

Ordained a priest in 1999 for the Diocese of Orlando, he previously served as rector of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest's St. Mary's Oratory and as auxiliary bishop of Orlando, emphasizing priestly formation and Eucharistic devotion.[8][9]
