The Diocese of Alton, a suffragan diocese of the Latin Rite, was a historic diocese in the United States. Established in 1857 by Pope Pius IX, it served Catholics in central and southern Illinois until its suppression in 1923. Its territory formed the basis for the present Diocese of Springfield in Illinois. The see was later designated a titular see.

Establishment

The Diocese of Alton was erected on 9 January 1857 by Pope Pius IX to serve the expanding Catholic population in central and southern Illinois, carved from territory previously under the Diocese of Chicago and the Diocese of Quincy.

History

Early Years

The diocese began with limited resources in a frontier setting. Its first bishop oversaw the construction of churches and schools amid rapid immigration.

Suppression and Transition

In 1923 the see was transferred to Springfield, resulting in the suppression of the Diocese of Alton and the erection of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.

Geography

The diocese covered a large portion of central and southern Illinois, including counties such as Madison, St. Clair, Macoupin, Montgomery, Sangamon, and others extending southward.

Mother Church

The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Alton served as the mother church until the see was moved.
