Dili is the capital and largest city of Timor-Leste (East Timor), located on the northern coast of the island of Timor overlooking the Ombai Strait.
As of 2025 estimates, the municipality has a population of approximately 1,400,000 inhabitants (with the city proper around 300,000–400,000).
It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Dili and serves as the principal center of Catholic life in Timor-Leste, one of the most Catholic countries in the world (approximately 97–98% of the national population identifies as Catholic).
History
Dili’s Catholic heritage is closely linked to Portuguese colonization and the Church’s role during the Indonesian occupation and independence struggle.
Early settlement
The area around Dili was inhabited by indigenous Timorese peoples long before European contact. The Portuguese established a permanent settlement in Dili in 1769, moving the colonial capital there from Lifau for better harbor facilities.[1]
Catholic evangelization
Catholicism arrived with Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century. The Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Dili (Catedral da Imaculada Conceição), the main cathedral of the archdiocese, was constructed in the late 20th century (consecrated in 1988 and blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1989).
During the Indonesian occupation (1975–1999), the Catholic Church played a vital role in defending human rights and supporting the independence movement, with many clergy and religious providing shelter and advocacy. The Archdiocese of Dili was erected in 1983 (initially as a diocese) and elevated to metropolitan status in 2019 with the creation of new dioceses.
The large Cristo Rei of Dili statue (a 27-meter Christ the King statue on a hill overlooking the city) was built in 1996 as a symbol during the occupation period.
Modern faith life
Timor-Leste is one of the most Catholic nations in the world, with 97–98% of the population identifying as Catholic. The Archdiocese of Dili serves a large portion of the country and maintains active pastoral care, education, and social services.
The cathedral hosts major national liturgies, and the Church continues to enjoy high esteem for its role in the independence struggle. Pope Francis visited Dili in September 2024, celebrating Mass with hundreds of thousands of faithful.
