Catholic Theological Union is a Catholic graduate school of theology and ministry located in Chicago, Illinois, offering graduate theological education since 1968. Governed by a corporation of 21 men's religious communities, it describes itself as one of the largest schools of theology and ministry in the United States, forming students from more than forty countries to serve as leaders for the Church.
History
In 1964, Cardinal Leo Joseph Suenens of Belgium spoke at the University of Chicago and urged that seminaries of the future might be urban based, in the context of a great academic center, and ecumenical in spirit. Catholic Theological Union has offered graduate theological education since 1968. CTU is governed by a corporation of 21 men's religious communities, and the provincials of each community comprise CTU's Corporation Board.
Academics
CTU offers the degrees of Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Ministry, Doctor of Ministry, Master of Arts (Theology), Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies, and MA in Hispanic Theology and Ministry, along with certificate programs in areas including Biblical Spirituality, Black Theology and Ministry, Franciscan Spirituality, Hispanic Theology and Ministry, Intercultural Studies, Interreligious Studies, Liturgical Studies, Mission Studies, Pastoral Studies, Reconciliation and Restorative Justice, and Spirituality/Spiritual Formation. Academic departments include Biblical Literature and Languages (BLL), Historical and Doctrinal Studies (HDS), Intercultural Studies and Ministry (ICSM), Spirituality and Pastoral Ministry (SPM), and Word and Worship (WW). Faculty members have served as General Editors of the Jerome Biblical Commentary for the Twenty-First Century and the Wisdom Commentary, and the school's Schreiter Institute teaches Reconciliation Theology and Restorative Justice.
Current Status
The president of CTU is Fr. Enzo Del Brocco, CP, a Passionist priest of the St. Paul of the Cross Province, described as CTU's eighth president. The school is located at 5416 South Cornell Avenue in Chicago's Hyde Park area.
