Cartago is a city in central Costa Rica, the capital of Cartago Province, located in the Central Valley approximately 24 kilometers southeast of San José. As of 2025 estimates, the urban population is approximately 189,608 inhabitants.
It is one of Costa Rica's most important Catholic pilgrimage centers, home to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels), the national shrine housing the venerated image of Our Lady of the Angels (La Negrita), patroness of Costa Rica.
History
Cartago was the capital of Costa Rica during much of the colonial and early republican period and remains a key center of Catholic devotion.
Early settlement
Cartago was founded in 1563 by Spanish conquistador Juan Vázquez de Coronado as the capital of the province. It suffered repeated destruction from earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its proximity to the Irazú volcano.[1]
Catholic evangelization
According to tradition, on August 2, 1635, a young indigenous girl named Juana Pereira discovered a small dark stone image of the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus near the village of Los Pardos (now part of Cartago). The image repeatedly returned to the same spot when moved, interpreted as a divine sign. A chapel was built, and devotion to the Virgen de los Ángeles (La Negrita) grew rapidly, with numerous reported miracles and healings. The current Byzantine-style basilica was constructed between 1918 and 1924 after earlier structures were damaged by earthquakes. Pope Pius XI granted it minor basilica status in 1935. The image was crowned in 1926, and Our Lady of the Angels was officially proclaimed patroness of Costa Rica. The annual Romería pilgrimage on August 2 draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who walk (sometimes on their knees) to the basilica.

The annual Romería on August 2 is a major national event, with estimates of over 2 million participants in recent years (many walking from San José or farther).
