Blessed Pauline von Mallinckrodt
Blessed Pauline von Mallinckrodt (born June 3, 1817 AD in Minden, Germany; died April 30, 1881 AD in Paderborn, Germany) was a German Catholic religious and the foundress of the Sisters of Christian Charity, a congregation devoted to the education of children, especially the blind, and the care of the poor and sick. Her feast day is April 30.
Born into a distinguished family of the Rhineland, Pauline von Mallinckrodt devoted herself from youth to charitable work among the poor of Paderborn, nursing the sick and caring for neglected children. In 1849 she founded the Sisters of Christian Charity, which grew rapidly and, during the persecutions of the Kulturkampf, spread to North America and beyond.
She was declared Venerable in 1983 and beatified by Saint John Paul II on April 14, 1985, in Rome.

Biography
Birth and early life
Pauline von Mallinckrodt was born on June 3, 1817, in Minden, Westphalia, Germany, into a prominent family; her father was a senior civil official and her mother a devout Catholic. She was raised in a home that combined social standing with Christian charity.
From her youth she showed a deep concern for the poor and the sick, whom she visited and served in the town of Paderborn, where her family later lived. After the deaths of her parents she took charge of her household and dedicated herself increasingly to works of mercy.
Charitable work and foundation
Pauline's charity extended especially to children. In 1840 she opened a kindergarten for poor children and a care home for blind children, whose needs were then largely neglected. To carry on and expand this work she gathered companions, and on August 21, 1849, she founded the Sisters of Christian Charity in Paderborn.
The new congregation devoted itself to the education of children — particularly the blind — and to the care of the poor and sick. It grew quickly across Germany and drew the esteem of the Church for its dedication.
The Kulturkampf and expansion
During the Kulturkampf, the anti-Catholic policies of the German state severely restricted religious congregations. In response, Mallinckrodt sent her sisters abroad, and the congregation established itself in North and South America, taking root especially in the United States, where it continued its educational and charitable mission.
Death
Pauline von Mallinckrodt died of pneumonia on April 30, 1881, in Paderborn, Germany, having guided her congregation through decades of growth and trial.
