Blessed Pauline Marie Jaricot
Blessed Pauline Marie Jaricot (born July 22, 1799 AD in Lyon, France; died January 9, 1862 AD in Lyon, France) was a French Catholic laywoman and lay Dominican who founded the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and the Association of the Living Rosary. A daughter of the silk-manufacturing bourgeoisie of Lyon, she devoted her life and fortune to the support of the missions and the spread of prayer among ordinary Catholics. Her feast day is January 9.
Pauline Jaricot organized a simple system of small weekly offerings for the missions that grew into the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, one of the principal mission-aid works of the Catholic Church. In 1826 she likewise founded the Association of the Living Rosary, grouping the faithful into circles who each prayed a single decade of the Rosary daily. Having exhausted her wealth in a failed charitable industrial venture, she spent her final years in poverty.
She was declared Venerable in 1963 and beatified on May 22, 2022, in Lyon, the ceremony being celebrated by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle on behalf of Pope Francis.

Biography
Birth and early life
Pauline Marie Jaricot was born on July 22, 1799, in Lyon, France, the youngest child of a prosperous family of silk manufacturers. She grew up in the comfortable circumstances of the Lyonnais commercial bourgeoisie in the years following the French Revolution.
As a young woman she was drawn to the fashionable life of her social class, but a serious fall and a subsequent sermon on vanity brought about a conversion. On Christmas Day of 1816 she made a private vow of perpetual virginity and thereafter dedicated herself to prayer, works of charity, and the service of the poor and of working women.
Foundation of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith
Moved by the needs of the Catholic missions, Jaricot devised a simple and durable method of support: she organized subscribers into groups of ten, each member contributing a small coin each week and recruiting others, so that the offerings of many ordinary people could sustain the missionary work of the Church. This organization, begun in Lyon, became the basis of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, formally established in 1822.
The society spread rapidly beyond France and became one of the principal mission-aid works of the Catholic Church; it was later raised to pontifical status. Although others assumed its formal direction, the foundational inspiration is attributed to Jaricot.
The Living Rosary
In 1826 Jaricot founded the Association of the Living Rosary, in which members were grouped into circles of fifteen, each person praying one decade of the Rosary daily so that together the group completed the entire Rosary. The association encouraged prayer and the distribution of good literature among the faithful and spread widely throughout France and beyond.
Later life and poverty
In an effort to improve the conditions of industrial workers, Jaricot invested her fortune in a factory enterprise intended as a model Christian workplace. The venture failed and left her financially ruined and burdened with debts, which she labored to repay for the rest of her life. She endured these reverses, together with poor health, with patience and continued devotion.
Death
Pauline Marie Jaricot died in poverty on January 9, 1862, in Lyon, France. She was buried in the church of Saint-Nizier in Lyon, where her tomb is venerated.

Canonization
Venerable
Pauline Marie Jaricot was declared Venerable by Pope John XXIII in 1963, in recognition of her life of heroic virtue.
Beatification
The miracle required for her beatification was recognized by Pope Francis on May 26, 2020: the healing of Mayline Tran, a young girl of Lyon whose recovery from grave illness in 2012 was attributed to Jaricot's intercession. She was beatified on May 22, 2022, at Eurexpo in Lyon, in a ceremony celebrated by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle on behalf of Pope Francis.
