Biography

Ogerius was born about 1136 at Trino in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. He entered the Cistercian Order, the reformed branch of Benedictine monasticism, at the abbey of Lucedio, an important monastery of the region. There he lived the austere Cistercian life of prayer, silence, and labor, growing in holiness and in reputation for wisdom.

In time he was chosen abbot of Lucedio, which he governed with prudence and zeal for religious observance. He was esteemed as a preacher and writer, and left spiritual works, among them sermons and meditations, including compositions honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, to whom he was devoted.

Ogerius died at the abbey of Lucedio in 1214. He was venerated as a Blessed, especially within the Cistercian Order, and his feast is traditionally kept on September 10. As the historical record concerning him is in part limited, further particulars are not asserted here with certainty.
