Blessed Mykola Carneckyj
Blessed Mykola Carneckyj (born December 14, 1884 AD in Semakivtsi, Ukraine; died April 2, 1959 AD in Lviv, Ukraine) was a Ukrainian Greek Catholic bishop and Redemptorist, a leader of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church who suffered long imprisonment and died a martyr under the Soviet Communist regime. Also written Mykola Charnetsky, he is venerated as a Blessed and martyr of the Church. His feast day is April 2.
An apostolic administrator and tireless pastor, Bishop Mykola Carneckyj was arrested when the Soviet state suppressed the Greek Catholic Church, endured years in prisons and labor camps, and died of the sufferings inflicted on him. He was beatified in 2001 among the Ukrainian martyrs.

Biography
Mykola Carneckyj was born on December 14, 1884, at Semakivtsi in Galicia, in the western part of present-day Ukraine. He studied for the priesthood, was ordained, and taught in the seminary before entering the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists) of the Byzantine rite, devoting himself to preaching missions and to the spiritual care of the Greek Catholic faithful.
He was ordained a bishop and made apostolic visitor and administrator for Greek Catholics in the regions of Volhynia and beyond, working for the unity and vitality of the Church. After the Second World War, the Soviet regime moved to destroy the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, declaring it illegal, seizing its property, and arresting its bishops, clergy, and religious.
Bishop Carneckyj was arrested in 1945 and condemned to imprisonment. He spent many years in Soviet prisons and forced-labor camps, enduring interrogations, harsh conditions, and repeated transfers, all of which broke his health. Released at last when he was near death, he returned to Lviv, where he continued in secret to strengthen the underground Church until he died on April 2, 1959, worn out by his sufferings. He was beatified on June 27, 2001, by Pope John Paul II at Lviv, among the Blessed martyrs of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. His feast is kept on April 2.
