Biography
Dominik Trcka was born on July 6, 1886, at Frýdlant nad Ostravicí in Moravia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists) and was ordained a priest. Drawn to the mission among the Slavs of the Eastern rite, he transferred to the Byzantine (Greek Catholic) rite and took the religious name Metod (Methodius), devoting himself to preaching missions and building up the Greek Catholic communities of eastern Slovakia and neighboring lands.
He became a superior of the Redemptorists of the Byzantine rite, establishing a house at Michalovce and laboring tirelessly for the spiritual good of the faithful. After the Second World War, the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia moved to destroy the Greek Catholic Church, outlawing it and persecuting its clergy. Father Metod was arrested, tried, and condemned to a long term of imprisonment.
In prison he endured harsh treatment. Punished with solitary confinement in a freezing cell, he contracted pneumonia and died in the prison of Leopoldov on March 23, 1959, a martyr for his fidelity to the Church. He was beatified on November 4, 2001, by Pope John Paul II. His feast is kept on March 23.
