Biography

Matthew was born about 1085 in France. He embraced the monastic life in the tradition of Cluny, the great center of Benedictine reform, and was esteemed for his piety, his learning, and his devotion to religious observance. He was made prior of Saint-Martin-des-Champs in Paris, an important Cluniac house, which he governed with zeal for discipline and the spiritual welfare of the monks.

His reputation brought him to the service of the Holy See, and he was created a cardinal, receiving the suburbicarian see of Albano near Rome. In this office he took part in the affairs of the Church during a period marked by disputes and by efforts at reform, serving as a counselor and legate and lending his weight to the cause of ecclesiastical order.

Matthew of Albano died on December 25, 1135. He was venerated as a Blessed, particularly within the Benedictine and Cluniac tradition. As the historical record concerning him is limited, further particulars of his career are not asserted here with certainty.
