Biography
Matilde Téllez Robles was born on May 30, 1841, at Robledillo de la Vera in the province of Cáceres, Spain, into a devout family. From her youth she was drawn to prayer, to devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, and to compassion for the poor and the sick, taking part in charitable associations in her town.
Convinced that God was calling her to found a new religious community, she overcame difficulties and, in 1875, established at Béjar in the province of Salamanca the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of the Church. The sisters combined adoration of the Eucharist with active works of mercy: the care of the sick and the poor, and the Christian education of children and young women. She took the religious name Matilde of the Sacred Heart (Matilde del Sagrado Corazón).
Guiding her congregation through its early trials with faith and perseverance, she formed her sisters in a spirit of humility and charity. She died at Béjar on December 17, 1902. She was beatified on November 21, 2004, by Pope John Paul II. Her feast is kept on December 17.
