Biography

Marmaduke Bowes was a Yorkshire gentleman living in England during the persecution of Catholics under Queen Elizabeth I, when to be a priest ordained abroad, or to shelter such a priest, was made a capital crime. Though for a time he outwardly conformed to the established religion out of fear, he remained sympathetic to the old faith and gave hospitality to a Catholic priest, Hugh Taylor.

He was betrayed and arrested, and at York he was brought to trial for having harbored the priest. Condemned to death under the penal laws, he was fully reconciled to the Catholic Church before he suffered. He was hanged at York on November 26, 1585—by tradition the day after the martyrdom of the priest Hugh Taylor himself.

Marmaduke Bowes was beatified on November 22, 1987, by Pope John Paul II, among the group known as the Eighty-Five Martyrs of England and Wales. His feast is kept on November 26, and he is also honored with his companions among the martyrs of the English persecution.
