Blessed Marie d'Oignies
Blessed Marie d'Oignies (born about 1177 AD in Nivelles, Brabant; died June 23, 1213 AD in Oignies, Brabant) was a mystic and holy woman of medieval Brabant, in the region of the present-day Belgium, often regarded as a spiritual mother of the Beguine movement. Renowned for her austere penance, her devotion to the Passion of Christ and the Eucharist, and her gift of tears, she profoundly influenced the preacher Jacques de Vitry, who became her disciple and wrote her Life. She is venerated as a Blessed. Her feast day is June 23.
Though she left no religious order and was never the subject of a formal medieval canonization, Marie d'Oignies has long been honored for her holiness, and her example helped shape the pious women's movement of the Low Countries.

Biography
Marie was born about 1177 at Nivelles in Brabant, in what is now Belgium. Married young at the wish of her family, she persuaded her husband to live with her in continence, and together they devoted themselves to the care of lepers at Willambroux near Nivelles. Drawn ever more deeply to a life of penance, prayer, and poverty, she later withdrew to a cell near the priory of Oignies, where she lived austerely.
Marie was celebrated in her own time for her intense mystical life: her devotion to the sufferings of Christ, her ardent love of the Eucharist, her long fasts and vigils, and the abundant tears with which she wept over the Passion and the sins of the world. The preacher Jacques de Vitry, later a cardinal, came to know her, became her disciple, and after her death composed her Life, which spread her fame and made her a model for the devout women of the region.
She is often numbered among the first Beguines—laywomen who lived a life of prayer, chastity, and charity without formal religious vows. Marie d'Oignies died at Oignies on June 23, 1213. She has long been venerated as a Blessed, and her feast is kept on June 23. As with many figures of the distant medieval past, some details of her life are known chiefly through her early biographer, and this account keeps to what that tradition reports.
