Biography

Alodie-Virginie Paradis was born on May 12, 1840, at L'Acadie in Quebec, Canada. As a young woman she entered the Marianites of Holy Cross, taking the name Marie-Léonie, and for a number of years she served the community's works, including a period in the United States and in New Brunswick.

Out of her experience she came to see a particular need and a particular vocation: the sanctification of humble domestic work carried out in the service of priests, seminaries, colleges, and religious communities. In 1880 she founded the Little Sisters of the Holy Family, whose members undertook cooking, cleaning, sewing, and similar labors as their path to holiness, doing ordinary tasks with extraordinary love. The congregation's motherhouse was established at Sherbrooke.

Marie-Léonie guided and formed her sisters until her death at Sherbrooke on May 3, 1912. She was beatified on September 11, 1984, by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Montreal—the first beatification celebrated on Canadian soil. Her feast is kept on May 4.
