Blessed Marie-Joseph Cassant
Blessed Marie-Joseph Cassant (born March 6, 1878 AD in Casseneuil, Lot-et-Garonne, France; died June 17, 1903 AD at the Abbey of Sainte-Marie du Désert, France) was a French Trappist (Cistercian) monk and priest, known for his humble simplicity, his patient endurance of illness, and his tender devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He is venerated as a Blessed of the Church. His feast day is June 17.
Of limited natural gifts and delicate health, Marie-Joseph Cassant reached holiness by a hidden path of trust and abandonment to God, guided by his novice-master. He died young of tuberculosis and was beatified in 2004.

Biography
Joseph Cassant was born on March 6, 1878, at Casseneuil in the Lot-et-Garonne region of France. A pious but timid and slow-learning boy, he found ordinary studies difficult, yet he longed to serve God as a priest and religious. With the encouragement of his parish priest, he entered the Trappist Abbey of Sainte-Marie du Désert, taking the name Brother Marie-Joseph.
In the monastery he was helped greatly by his novice-master, Father André Malet, who understood his limitations and formed him gently in the way of confidence and love. Marie-Joseph embraced a spirituality centered on the Sacred Heart of Jesus, offering to God his difficulties, his struggles with study, and the sufferings of his failing health. Ordained a priest despite his fragile condition, he was already gravely ill with tuberculosis.
He bore his final illness with peace and abandonment to God, and died at the abbey on June 17, 1903, at the age of twenty-five. He was beatified on October 3, 2004, by Pope John Paul II, held up as an example of holiness reached through humble trust. His feast is kept on June 17.
