Blessed Mariano de la Mata Aparicio
Blessed Mariano de la Mata Aparicio (born December 31, 1905 AD in Barcenilla, Palencia, Spain; died April 5, 1983 AD in São Paulo, Brazil) was a Spanish Augustinian priest who spent most of his life as a missionary and educator in Brazil, devoting himself to teaching, to charity toward the poor, and to the promotion of vocations. He is venerated as a Blessed of the Church. His feast day is April 5.
A humble and hardworking Augustinian, Mariano de la Mata labored for decades in Brazil, esteemed for his gentleness, his care of students and the poor, and his tireless charity. He was beatified in 2006.

Biography
Mariano de la Mata Aparicio was born on December 31, 1905, at Barcenilla, in the province of Palencia, Spain. He entered the Order of Saint Augustine, made his profession, and was ordained a priest. Early in his religious life he was sent to Brazil, and it was there, chiefly in São Paulo, that he spent almost his entire priestly life as a missionary.
He devoted himself above all to education, working for decades in the Augustinian college of São Paulo as a teacher, administrator, and formator. He was known for his humility, gentleness, and patience, and for his deep dedication to his students, in whom he sought to form Christian character. Beyond the school he gave himself to pastoral work, to the promotion of vocations and of the Augustinian family, and to untiring charity toward the poor and needy, whom he sought out and helped.
Esteemed as a holy and self-effacing religious, "a saint of everyday life," Mariano de la Mata continued his labors into old age. He died at São Paulo, Brazil, on April 5, 1983. He was beatified on November 5, 2006, in Rome, in a ceremony authorized by Pope Benedict XVI and celebrated by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins. His feast is kept on April 5.
