Biography
Mariana de Jesús Navarro de Guevara was born on January 17, 1565, at Madrid, Spain, into a noble family. Devout from her youth, she resolved to consecrate herself to God and refused the marriages proposed for her, persevering in her desire despite family pressure.
She entered the Third Order of Our Lady of Mercy (the Mercedarians), the order founded for the ransom of Christian captives, living as a Mercedarian tertiary. Rather than a public life, she embraced a hidden existence of extreme penance, prayer, and mortification, dwelling in seclusion and devoting herself to the poor, the sick, and the suffering of Madrid, to whom she gave generous aid.
She was favored with mystical graces and became known, despite her retirement, for her holiness, so that she was sought out for prayers and counsel. She bore illnesses and austerities with heroic patience.
Mariana of Jesus died at Madrid on April 17, 1624. She was beatified in 1783 by Pope Pius VI. Her feast is kept on April 17. (She is to be distinguished from Saint Mariana de Jesús de Paredes, the "Lily of Quito.")
