Biography
María del Pilar Izquierdo Albero was born on July 27, 1906, at Zaragoza, Spain, into a poor family, and worked from a young age. In her twenties she was struck by a grave illness, following an accident, that left her progressively paralyzed and, in time, blind and bedridden, in great and constant suffering.
Rather than being crushed by her condition, María del Pilar accepted it with remarkable faith, peace, and even joy, offering her sufferings for the salvation of souls and the good of others. From her sickbed she radiated a serenity and charity that drew others to her, and around her gathered companions who wished to share her spirit.
Moved by love of the poor and of the Gospel, she conceived and founded the Missionary Work of Jesus and Mary (Obra Misionera de Jesús y María), a work of charity and evangelization devoted to serving poor children, the needy, and the abandoned, and to making Christ known. She guided this foundation despite her infirmity, and it took root, first in Madrid and then elsewhere.
María del Pilar Izquierdo Albero died at Zaragoza on August 27, 1945. She was beatified on November 4, 2001, by Pope John Paul II. Her feast is kept on August 27.
