Biography

María Vicenta Chávez Orozco was born on July 9, 1867, at Cotija in the Mexican state of Michoacán, into a devout family. As a young woman she suffered a serious and prolonged illness; upon her recovery she resolved to dedicate herself entirely to God and to the service of the sick and the poor, in gratitude for the health she had regained.

She began caring for the sick poor in Guadalajara, taking in those whom others neglected. In time this work grew into a religious congregation, the Servants of the Holy Trinity and of the Poor, which she founded to combine adoration of the Blessed Trinity with the corporal and spiritual care of the sick. She guided the congregation for many years, forming her sisters in a spirit of humble, self-effacing charity.

She took the religious name Maria Vicenta of Saint Dorothy. She died at Guadalajara on July 30, 1949. She was beatified on November 9, 1997, and canonized on May 21, 2000, by Pope John Paul II. Her feast is kept on July 30.
