Biography
Maria Scrilli was born on May 15, 1825, at Montevarchi in Tuscany. From her youth she was drawn to prayer and to the spirit of Carmel, and she came to believe that God was calling her to found a religious community devoted both to contemplation and to the education of girls.
In 1854 she began the Institute of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Montevarchi, gathering companions to share a life shaped by the Carmelite tradition of prayer and by the apostolate of teaching. The community faced serious trials, including the political upheavals and the suppression of religious houses that accompanied the unification of Italy, which for a time dispersed the sisters. Maria Scrilli persevered in faith and hope, taking the name Maria Teresa of Jesus, and the institute survived to continue its mission; it is today known as the Carmelite Sisters of Saint Teresa of Florence.
She died at Florence on November 14, 1889. She was beatified on October 8, 2006, in Florence, during the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI. Her feast is kept on November 14.
