Biography
Maria Pia Mastena was born on December 7, 1881, at Bovolone, near Verona in northern Italy. Drawn to the religious life, she entered a teaching congregation and taught for some years, but she felt called to a more contemplative and reparatory vocation and, after a period of searching that included time with the Trappists, she followed the path God opened to her.
At the heart of her spirituality was devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus—the face of Christ disfigured in his Passion, an object of reparation and of longing to console the suffering Lord and to make his merciful love known. She desired to "restore, keep, and spread" the image and love of the Holy Face in the world.
To this end she founded, in 1936, the Congregation of the Religious of the Holy Face (Suore del Santo Volto). The sisters unite a life of prayer, adoration, and reparation before the Blessed Sacrament with active works of charity—teaching, care of the sick, and other apostolates—so that contemplation of Christ's Face overflows into service of his members. The congregation took root and spread.
Maria Pia Mastena died at Rome on June 28, 1951. She was beatified on November 13, 2005, by Pope Benedict XVI. Her feast is kept on June 28.
