Blessed Maria Mercedes Prat
Blessed Maria Mercedes Prat (Spanish: María Mercedes Prat y Prat; born March 6, 1880 AD in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain; died July 24, 1936 AD in Barcelona, Spain) was a Spanish religious sister of the Society of Saint Teresa of Jesus (the Teresian Sisters), a teacher and artist, who was martyred during the religious persecution of the Spanish Civil War. She is honored among the Martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. Her feast day is July 24.
A Teresian Sister devoted to the Christian education of the young, María Mercedes Prat was seized in Barcelona at the outbreak of the persecution and, refusing to deny her faith, was shot, dying of her wounds. She was beatified in 1990.

Biography
María Mercedes Prat y Prat was born on March 6, 1880, at Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. Gifted in the arts, especially in needlework and painting, she entered the Society of Saint Teresa of Jesus—the Teresian Sisters, founded by Saint Enrique de Ossó for the Christian education of youth. She made her profession and devoted herself to teaching and to the works of the congregation, using her artistic talents in its service.
When the Spanish Civil War broke out in July 1936, a fierce persecution of the Church erupted in Barcelona and throughout the areas held by the anti-clerical forces. Religious houses were seized, and sisters and priests were in immediate danger. The Teresian community was forced to disperse.
Sister María Mercedes and a companion were seized by militiamen in the streets of Barcelona. Recognized as a religious and refusing to renounce her faith, she was shot and left grievously wounded on the night of July 23–24, 1936. She died of her wounds on July 24, a martyr for Christ, forgiving her killers.
María Mercedes Prat was beatified on April 29, 1990, by Pope John Paul II, among the martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. Her feast is kept on July 24.
