Biography
María López de Rivas was born on August 18, 1560, at Tartanedo, in the province of Guadalajara, Spain. As a young woman she was drawn to the reformed Carmel that Saint Teresa of Ávila was then establishing across Spain. She entered the Discalced Carmelites at Toledo, and, according to the tradition, was received and clothed by Saint Teresa herself, taking the name María de Jesús (Mary of Jesus).
She lived the whole of her long religious life—some sixty years—in the convent of Toledo, embracing the enclosed contemplative life of prayer, penance, silence, and community that Teresa had shaped. She was distinguished by her profound humility, her exact obedience, and her hidden life of union with God, and she was favored with high mystical graces, including visions and an intense devotion to the Passion of Christ, while striving to keep these gifts concealed.
Esteemed within her community and beyond for her holiness and wisdom, she served at times in offices of the convent and was sought as a spiritual guide. She bore the infirmities of old age with patience.
María de Jesús López de Rivas died at Toledo on September 13, 1640, at the age of eighty. She was beatified in 1926 by Pope Pius XI. Her feast is kept on September 13.
