Biography
Maria Anna Sala was born on April 21, 1829, at Brivio in Lombardy, Italy, into a large family of modest means. Educated for a time by the newly founded Sisters of Saint Marcellina—the Marcelline Sisters, established at Milan for the Christian education of girls—she felt called to their life, and despite family difficulties she entered the congregation, making her profession in 1852.
For nearly four decades she devoted herself to teaching in the schools of the Marcelline Sisters, chiefly in and around Milan. She taught a range of subjects and was esteemed as a gifted, dedicated, and patient educator, forming her pupils not only in learning but in faith and virtue, and winning their affection by her gentleness and holiness. She also served in positions of responsibility within the schools.
In her last years she was stricken with a cancer of the throat, which she bore with remarkable serenity, patience, and abandonment to God, continuing to edify her sisters and pupils by her example even in suffering.
Maria Anna Sala died at Milan on November 24, 1891. She was beatified on October 26, 1980, by Pope John Paul II. Her feast is kept on November 24.
