Biography

Margaret was born in 1230 at Faenza, in the Romagna region of Italy. As a young woman she attached herself to Saint Umiltà (Humility) of Faenza, the holy foundress of the Vallombrosan Benedictine nuns, becoming her devoted disciple and companion.

She followed Umiltà in the religious life and in the foundation and governance of convents of the Vallombrosan nuns, including at Florence. Formed by her mistress in a life of prayer, penance, and observance, Margaret was esteemed for her own holiness and prudence.

After the death of Saint Umiltà, Margaret succeeded her in the governance of the community, serving as abbess. She led the nuns with wisdom and fidelity to their founder's spirit, and lived to a great age, dying at Faenza on August 26, 1330.

Margaret of Faenza was venerated as a Blessed of the Benedictine Order, and her feast is kept on August 26. Because the sources are chiefly monastic, some particulars of her life are known only in outline.
