Biography

María de los Ángeles Ginard Martí was born on April 3, 1894, at Llucmajor on the island of Majorca, Spain, into a devout family. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Zeal for the Salvation of Souls (the Celadoras), a religious institute dedicated to Eucharistic adoration, the care and adornment of divine worship, and prayer for the salvation of souls. She made her profession and served the congregation in various houses, including in Madrid.

When the Spanish Civil War broke out in July 1936, a violent persecution of the Church erupted in the areas controlled by the anti-clerical forces. Religious were hunted, and convents were closed. Sister María de los Ángeles was forced to leave her community and seek refuge, but she was recognized and arrested in Madrid.

Imprisoned, she remained steadfast in her faith and her consecration. On August 26, 1936, she was taken out and shot, dying a martyr for Christ.

María de los Ángeles Ginard Martí was beatified on October 29, 2005, in Rome, in the great beatification of hundreds of Spanish martyrs of the twentieth century, celebrated on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins. Her feast is kept on August 26.
