Biography
Manuel Gómez González was born in 1877 in Spain (in Galicia). He was ordained a priest and emigrated to Brazil, where there was need of clergy for the growing Catholic population, especially among immigrant communities in the south. He served as a parish priest in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, ministering in a vast rural territory and traveling to reach scattered communities.
He was assisted in his ministry by a devout teenage altar server, Adílio Daronch, the son of a local family, who accompanied him on his pastoral journeys.
In May 1924, amid the political and armed unrest that troubled the region, Father Manuel and young Adílio were seized by armed men while on a journey to attend to the faithful. The two were held and then, on May 30, 1924, killed—the priest for his faith and priestly ministry, and the boy for his fidelity in accompanying him. Their deaths were recognized by the Church as a martyrdom in hatred of the faith.
Manuel Gómez González and Adílio Daronch were beatified together on October 21, 2007, at São Paulo, in a ceremony authorized by Pope Benedict XVI and celebrated by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, in the great beatification of Brazilian and other martyrs. Their memory is honored among the martyrs of Brazil.
