Biography

Luigi Talamoni was born on October 3, 1848, at Monza in Lombardy, Italy. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Milan in 1871. A man of learning, he became a professor in the seminary, teaching for many years and forming generations of students, and he was esteemed as a scholar and a wise and holy confessor.

Deeply rooted in his native Monza, Talamoni combined his teaching and priestly ministry with tireless service to the poor and the sick. He was also active in the civic and social life of the city, seeking to defend the interests of the Church and of the working people in a difficult period, and he served for a time on the provincial council.

Moved by the needs of the sick and suffering, he founded in 1891 the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of Saint Gerard, whose sisters devoted themselves to nursing the sick, both in hospitals and in their homes, and to works of charity in Monza and beyond.

Luigi Talamoni died at Monza on January 31, 1926, mourned by his city. He was beatified on March 21, 2004, by Pope John Paul II. His feast is kept on January 31.
