Blessed Lucy of Amelia

Blessed Lucy of Amelia (Italian: Lucia Bufalari; died c. 1350 AD in Amelia, Umbria, Italy) was an Italian Augustinian nun who served as prioress of a convent at Amelia in Umbria, sister of the Augustinian hermit Blessed Andrew of Montereale. She is venerated as a Blessed of the Augustinian Order. Her feast day is July 27.

Noted for her holiness, austerity, and gifts of prayer, Lucy governed her community with wisdom and was credited with the power to deliver the possessed. Her cult has long been maintained in Umbria and the Augustinian Order.

Biography

Lucy Bufalari was born in the region of Umbria, Italy, in the fourteenth century, into the family of the Bufalari; her brother was the Augustinian hermit Blessed Andrew of Montereale. Drawn to the religious life, she entered the Order of Saint Augustine as a nun.

She became prioress of an Augustinian convent at Amelia, in Umbria, which she governed with prudence, austerity, and holiness. She was esteemed for her deep life of prayer and penance and for her care of her sisters. Tradition attributes to her the gift of delivering people afflicted by evil spirits, and various miracles were reported through her.

Lucy of Amelia died about the year 1350. She was venerated as a Blessed of the Augustinian Order, and her feast is kept on July 27. Because the sources are chiefly local and of her order, some particulars of her life cannot be established with precision.
