Biography
Louise Bessay de la Voûte was a laywoman of noble family in western France at the time of the French Revolution. When the revolutionary government persecuted the Catholic Church and the region of Anjou and Poitou was engulfed in the War in the Vendée, many of the faithful—of every social rank—who refused to abandon their religion or the priests loyal to Rome were arrested and put to death.
During the Reign of Terror of 1793–1794, Louise Bessay de la Voûte was among those condemned for their fidelity to the Catholic faith. Like most of the lay martyrs of Angers, she was shot at Avrillé, on the outskirts of the city, at the site remembered as the Champ des Martyrs.
She was beatified on February 19, 1984, by Pope John Paul II as one of the ninety-nine Martyrs of Angers, whose collective feast is kept on February 1.
