Biography

Lorenzo Salvi was born on October 30, 1782, at Rome, into a devout family. As a young man he entered the Congregation of the Passion—the Passionists, founded by Saint Paul of the Cross—and was ordained a priest, taking in religion the name Lorenzo Maria of Saint Francis Xavier, after the great Jesuit missionary.

He devoted his priestly life above all to the preaching of popular missions and retreats, traveling through Rome and the regions of central Italy to call the people to conversion, to the sacraments, and to a fervent Christian life. He was esteemed as a zealous and effective preacher.

A distinguishing mark of his spirituality and apostolate was his ardent devotion to the Child Jesus, the mystery of the Incarnation and of God's humility and love. He spread this devotion widely and wrote numerous devotional booklets and works, especially in honor of the Infant Jesus, to nourish the piety of the faithful.

Lorenzo Maria died at Capranica, in Lazio, on June 12, 1856, while engaged in his preaching apostolate. He was beatified on October 1, 1989, by Pope John Paul II. His feast is kept on June 12.
