Biography
Early life and priesthood
Giuseppe Allamano was born on January 21, 1851, at Castelnuovo d'Asti (now Castelnuovo Don Bosco) in Piedmont, the same district that gave the Church Saint John Bosco and Saint Joseph Cafasso, the latter being Allamano's own uncle. Educated in part by the Salesians under Don Bosco, he entered the seminary of Turin and was ordained a priest in 1873.
Rector of the Consolata
In 1880 Allamano was appointed rector of the shrine of Our Lady Consolata (the Consolata) in Turin, one of the most beloved Marian sanctuaries of Italy, together with the associated ecclesiastical college. He restored and revitalized the shrine and made it a center of priestly formation and spiritual life. He also served as spiritual director and promoter of the cause of his uncle, Joseph Cafasso.
Founder of the Consolata Missionaries
Long moved by zeal for the evangelization of non-Christian peoples, Allamano founded in 1901 the Consolata Missionaries (the Consolata Missionary Fathers, IMC), to send missionaries especially to Africa; the first departed for Kenya in 1902. In 1910 he founded the Consolata Missionary Sisters to share in the same work. Though he never traveled to the missions himself, he formed, inspired, and directed a great missionary movement, insisting that holiness was the foundation of the apostolate.
Death and canonization
Joseph Allamano died at Turin on February 16, 1926. He was beatified on October 7, 1990, by Pope John Paul II. On October 20, 2024, he was canonized by Pope Francis and is now venerated as Saint Joseph Allamano. His feast is kept on February 16.
