Biography

Josep Tàpies i Sirvant was born on January 1, 1869, at Rocafort de Vallbona in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, Spain. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Urgell and served as a parish priest in the towns of the region, esteemed for his devotion and his care of his parishioners.

When the Spanish Civil War broke out in July 1936, a fierce persecution of the Catholic Church erupted in the areas controlled by the anti-clerical forces, especially in Catalonia. Priests and religious were hunted down and killed simply for their state as clergy. José Tàpies refused to flee or to hide his priesthood.

He was arrested and, with six other diocesan priests of the region, was condemned and shot in August 1936, dying for the faith. These seven are venerated together as Blessed José Tàpies and Companions.

They were beatified on October 28, 2007, in Rome, in the great beatification of hundreds of Spanish martyrs of the twentieth century, celebrated on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins. Their feast is observed on August 13.
