Blessed John of Salerno
Blessed John of Salerno (Italian: Giovanni da Salerno; born c. 1190 AD in Salerno, Italy; died August 9, 1242 AD in Florence, Italy) was an Italian Dominican friar, one of the first companions to be received into the Order of Preachers by Saint Dominic, and the founder of the Dominican presence in Florence, including the celebrated convent of Santa Maria Novella. He is venerated as a Blessed of the Dominican Order. His feast day is August 9.
Received into the young Order at Bologna by Saint Dominic himself, John of Salerno was sent to Florence, where he laid the foundations of Dominican life and preaching that would flourish at Santa Maria Novella. His cult was confirmed in 1783.

Biography
Giovanni da Salerno was born about 1190 at Salerno in southern Italy. He was among the earliest to be drawn to the new Order of Preachers founded by Saint Dominic. Tradition holds that he was received into the Order by Saint Dominic himself at Bologna, becoming one of the founder's own companions.
About 1219 or 1220, Dominic sent John with a small band of friars to Florence to establish the Order in that city. There John gathered a community and, over the following years, laid the foundations of the Dominican house that would become the great convent and church of Santa Maria Novella, one of the most important centers of Dominican life, learning, and art in Italy.
John governed and built up the Florentine community, preaching and forming friars, until his death. He died at Florence on August 9, 1242, and was venerated as a Blessed of the Dominican Order. His cult was confirmed in 1783 by Pope Pius VI. His feast is kept on August 9.
