Biography

John of Perugia was an Italian member of the Order of Friars Minor, the Franciscans, and a priest. In the spirit of the early Franciscan missions to the Muslim world—following the example of Saint Francis, who had gone to preach to the Sultan of Egypt—John was sent to Spain to carry the Gospel to the Muslims who then ruled much of the peninsula.

With his companion, the lay brother Blessed Peter of Sassoferrato, John went to Valencia, a city under Muslim rule. There the two friars preached the Christian faith openly. They were arrested by the Muslim authorities and urged to renounce Christ and accept Islam.

When they refused and continued to profess the faith, they were condemned and put to death at Valencia on September 3, 1231, dying as martyrs. John of Perugia and Peter of Sassoferrato were beatified in 1783 by Pope Pius VI. Their feast is kept on September 3.
