Biography
Giovanni della Penna was born about 1193 at Penna San Giovanni in the Marche of Italy. As a young man he was received into the Order of Friars Minor, the Franciscans, in the early days of the Order when Saint Francis of Assisi was still living or newly departed.
According to the tradition preserved in the *Little Flowers of Saint Francis* (Fioretti), John was sent while still young to preach in France, where he labored for some twenty-five years, helping to plant and build up the Order in that country. Called at last back to Italy, he returned to the Marche.
There he spent his old age in prayer, humility, and penance, esteemed for his holiness and his gift of consoling and directing souls. The Fioretti recount the graces and consolations granted to him and the manner of his holy death.
John of Penna died on April 3, 1271. He was long venerated as a Blessed, and his cult was confirmed in 1806 by Pope Pius VII. His feast is kept on April 3.
