Biography

John of Caramola was, according to tradition, a Frenchman who came to Italy and embraced the life of a hermit. He settled on Monte Caramola, a mountain in the region of Basilicata in southern Italy, where he gave himself to solitude, prayer, and severe penance.

In time he associated himself with the nearby Cistercian abbey of Santa Maria del Sagittario, entering as a lay brother (conversus) while continuing his life of austerity. He was known for his deep humility, his mortifications, and his reputation for holiness, and the people of the surrounding country held him in great veneration.

John of Caramola died in 1339. He has long been venerated as a Blessed in Basilicata, especially in the area of Chiaromonte, where his memory is preserved. Because the sources are chiefly local and devotional, some particulars of his life cannot be established with precision.
