John de Monte-Mirabili was born c. 1360 near Monte Mirabello in the Ferrara region, Emilia-Romagna. He lived as an Augustinian friar or hermit, known for his contemplative life and mystical gifts. His epithet "de Monte-Mirabili" (of the Marvelous Mountain) likely refers to the hilltop location of his hermitage.

He lived in the orbit of Este-ruled Ferrara, one of the great Renaissance court cities of northern Italy.

He died c. 1422. His feast day is October 22.
